CAA has recently highlighted a change to BP fuel bowsers that is catching some pilots out. The dollar amount is now shown large at the top of the display, with the number of litres below in a smaller font. Several reports have come in of pilots mistaking dollars for litres and putting far less fuel on board than they intended - in one case thinking they had loaded 40 litres when only about 11 went in.
Our fuel trailers at Paraparaumu don't show a dollar value, so this isn't something you'll see here. But when you're filling up at other aerodromes around the country, take note of what's on the bowser display.
After refuelling, dip the tanks so you know what you actually have on board.
On start-up, cross-check the dipped quantity against the fuel gauge.
