As a coastal aerodrome, we naturally experience more bird activity than many inland fields.
Before every flight, assess the bird hazard and actively manage it. If you see birds before lining up, advise Flight Service – they can deploy the bird-scaring cannons located at each runway threshold.
It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of a flight you've been looking forward to all week, but eagerness should never override good threat and error management.
Even when every precaution is taken, bird strikes or near misses can still occur. These must be reported via MIFIS. Reports should include:
- species (if known)
- number of birds
- location (e.g. abeam A3)
- whether evasive action was required
In the warmer months, new growth of grass and greenery brings increased wildlife activity, so be aware of the habits and behaviours of the local birds.
