Don't Skip the Checklist
Slow down and use the checklist every time; in winter, wait for the oil temperature to reach the green before run-ups, even if it takes 5–10 minutes.

Checklists help us standardise procedures, reduce human error and make sure nothing important is missed.
As keen aviators, we're naturally eager to get airborne – but rushing the process can lead to missed or incomplete checklist items. Taking a moment to slow down and follow the steps properly is always worth it.
In winter, it's especially important to make sure the engine is sufficiently warmed up before putting it under any stress. Check the oil temperature is in the green range before starting your run-ups as part of your checklist. If that means waiting 5–10 minutes, that's perfectly fine – it prevents unnecessary strain on the engine.
Key things to keep in mind when using checklists:
- Consistency – use the checklist on every flight, no exceptions.
- Don't rush – going too fast increases the risk of missing items.
- Confirm visually – if the checklist requires you to select or move something, look and double-check it's the correct control.
